School trip to Cirey sur Blaise
On Tuesday, May 3rd, after the holidays, we went to Cirey-sur-Blaise and Colombey-les-deux-Eglises. Cirey's castle was where Voltaire lived. We learnt that the castle was built in the 17yh century and that Voltaire added a new part to the castle in the 18th century. On this new part, there was initially a terrace which ws replaced by a roof in the 19th century. The kitchenis below the sitting-room and the Marquise's room. We also saw a church, built by the heirs. Voltaire had a little theatre inside the castle where he had stories played with Marquise or with friends.
Then we went to Colombey-les-deux-Eglises, where General de Gaulle died. Charles de Gaulle was born in 1890 and died in 1970, he had three children, two of whom are still alive : Philippe and Elizabeth. Anne died early as she was sick. De Gaulle saw both world wars but he was not yet famous during the first.. However he bacame famous during WWII.He was against the regime of Vichy which was under Petain's control. Unlike deGaulle, petain wanted France to accept Germany's conditions and refused to attack Hitler.
